The Work

Marija Basic’s art speaks to our deep need for connection with the natural world. Many of her paintings feature forms that are reminiscent of oceans or mountain landscapes. Yet her work is also somewhat autobiographical with memories of travel and life events woven throughout the work. The images gently move the viewer’s gaze around and through their rich surfaces, luxuriating in colour and dreamlike imagery. Looking at them awakens a feeling of calm in the viewer, where one can find tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of contemporary life.

The Artist

Marija (pronounced ‘Maria’) escaped the fast spin of corporate life to begin a second life as an artist, and it’s probably the best professional decision she ever made. Her work has been featured on The Block as well as by Inside Out magazine and numerous other interior design publications. While Marija has design qualifications from Swinburne University, the artist uses instinct and emotion to guide her creativity. Perhaps the reason her work has been so popular is that everything she makes or designs is imbued with an ambience of calm and natural beauty.

The Process

The artist works intuitively, letting her paints, inks or drawing materials guide the process, until an image dances across the paper or canvas. Her artworks represent an exploration of colour and form within the traditions of Abstract Expressionism. Each image becomes a voyage of journey and discovery. Marija immerses herself in the process of creation, allowing memories of natural landscapes to inspire her brushstrokes, yet while she works she feels weightless with a feeling of absolute freedom. Something of this process can be glimpsed in the final works, enchanting images by the artist for homes across Australia.

Marija is available for commissions. She works with corporate and individual clients to create exquisite artworks for the workplace or home.
